Brett Blaser: “Let's take a close look at the new Deuce Bar Center Skag for the Timbersled Traverse Ski and see what all the hype is about.

First, let's cover what it is and then how well it works. Now, holding it in my hand, it feels really solid. It feels like it will last forever and take a ton of abuse. It's designed specifically for the Timbersled Traverse ski and it utilizes the patented proven technology that dominated the 2000 mile Alaska Iron Dog race. There are two US and 1 Canadian patents issued on this skag.

Starting at the top, instead of using flexible old school round bar, its durable 7/16 carbon steel Host Bar uses a flat top to prevent bar roll and flex during aggressive cornering. The Deuce Bar has concave sides that further enhance stability, bite and control. It's easy to see how these channels will funnel and add control in soft snow. Now, notice how well the ends are tipped and chamfered. This will reduce catching when unloading.

Now, the leading face. This is the area that takes the most abuse, uses 2 flat tungsten carbide glide faces that are gonna wear forever and not hang up on hidden obstacles. That's how you achieve durability. Now, note the leading edges of the glide carbides, they're angled and the 90 degree angle in the pocket in the steel carbon host bar makes a stronger and more durable carbide union.

Now, it also uses 2 rows of 60 degree cutting carbides that are strategically positioned under the center of pressure of the ski and pushed to the outer edges so your ski always has a solid bite when you're cornering and carving. And two rows, well, they also help cut their own grooves, which eliminates darting that can plague round bar designs.

Now when you mount it up, you'll notice that the leading edge of the face of the skag is recessed and compliments the natural shape of the center keel, which will definitely improve how well the ski glides over those early season rocks and logs.

So, how does it work? Well, awesome. On the trail, I immediately noticed a lighter confident steering feel with a solid, consistent bite in the corners. With the dual 60 degree cutting carbides, there's also no fear of the occasional icy patch. Trail riding is easier and it gives a solid, confident feel at speed, but it definitely works well in the deep and it really glides well over those hidden snow obstacles that none of us ever admit we hit.

If you're looking for confident trail handling with the increased bite and long term durability that comes from carbides like these, see your Timbersled dealer or timbersled.com to get yours today.”
